Bird Cakes

You will need: 

 ·         ¾ cup of shortening 

 ·         1 cup of bird food mixture (sunflower seeds, chopped nuts, oats, coconut flakes, raisins, etc) or just purchase a bag

·         2 empty, clean and dry yogurt cups

·         1 metal hook such as an S hook from the hardware store

·         A strong ribbon, string or light weight chain for hanging

Directions:

Melt the shortening in a pot. Add the bird food mixture to the liquid and stir thoroughly. Fill the yogurt cups. Place the hook in as it sets, it should be able to stand up while the mixture is still “wet”. When it is set, you can put your hanging ribbon or string etc.  Keep the cups refrigerated until they have hardened and the food is solid.  Remove the yogurt cup and hang the treat up outside.

You can make these at home with your children or in your class with all your kids!  The birds will love you.
